Group B game Women’s World Cup 2023 between Nigeria and Canada is over. The score ended in a goalless draw in a game marred by penalties and VAR.

Playing at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Melbourne on Friday (21/7/2023), Canada took the initiative to attack from the get-go. Several opportunities have been created, but no objective yet.

Nigeria just put pressure after 20 consecutive minutes of play. In the 23rd minute, Ifeoma Onumonu got a chance with a kick from outside the penalty area, but the ball was cleared by Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

A buying and selling attack then ensued. Nigeria and Canada pressed on but failed to score before half-time.

In the second half, Canada got a penalty. Christine Sinclair’s violation by Francisca Ordega caused the referee to point fingers. Sinclair stepped forward to become executor, but Chiamaka Nnadozie saved the ball. Nigerians survived!

The Canadian pressure continued, with several chances presented by Ebelune Biens, who entered only in the second half.

Nigeria sometimes insisted, but to no avail. The match was fairly balanced, with Nigeria looking pretty solid.

In the final minutes, there was some VAR drama. Deborah Abiodun was sent off by the referee after her violation was reviewed by VAR. Nigeria played with 10 men in injury time.

Canada cannot take advantage of the players. Until the end of the game, the score lasts.

These results make Nigeria and Canada share a point in second and third place in Group B. Women’s World Cup 2023. Both are led by Australia, who lead with three points after beating Ireland 1-0.
