MALANG, KOMPAS.com – A resident of Pakis District, Malang Regency named Chaswanah Aini (18) was awarded a scholarship to study in a foreign university because she is known to be smart.
However, he was not accepted into two well-known state universities (PTN) in Indonesia.
Dwi Sulistiyarini, a teacher at Malang City 3 Public High School, said, “Chaswanah is a student who is eligible to enroll in the PTN through the SNBP pathway.

There are two universities registered by Chaswanah namely Universitas Brawijaya (UB) and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). But Chaswanah didn’t escape anyway.
“Based on the ranking of all students, Chaswanah is eligible or 40% of students in the school are eligible to enroll in the SNBP pathway, but Chaswanah does not qualify, possibly losing the competition. He ( Chaswanah) majored in management and business management,” said Dwi on Thursday (6/4/2023), who is also Chaswanah’s homeroom teacher.
The woman who teaches biology said Chaswanah has long wanted to enroll in a foreign university. While in 11th grade, Chaswanah attempted to enroll.
“Because he actively enrolled in the Advanced Indonesia Scholarship (BIM), including high-achieving students, he skipped grade 11 to enroll,” he said.
Thanks to BIM, Chaswanah was accepted into 3 foreign universities and 1 business school. Namely, University of Toronto Canada, McMastery University Canada, Monash University Australia, and DeGroote School of Business Canada.
According to him, Chaswanah’s struggle to be accepted into a foreign school was not easy.
“He is smart, independent, never gives up, pursues BIM without giving up on the list, until he keeps trying until he gets it. Actively participates in related zoom directions at scholarships, he takes care of the LoG (Letter from the Government), ”he said.
In fact, Chaswanah, who graduated in 2024, had a slightly lower grade.
“He, whose grades went down a bit last semester because he often left classes to enroll in foreign schools, often has zoom directions,” he said.
Dwi said Chaswanah was a smart student. While studying at SMA Negeri 3 Malang City, Chaswanah was in the science class and the Olympiad class. The total average report card value of all the lessons he attended was 87.
“So average or smart, the kids are active, they’re involved in extracurricular activities in computer engineering, and their English is really good,” he said.
He said SMA Negeri 3 Malang City students were among the few to be accepted by foreign universities, although there was only one each year.
“There are almost every year but not many, at most one or two students,” he said.

Dwi said Chaswanah was one of the disadvantaged students or beneficiaries of the Smart Indonesia program.
He therefore only hopes that what Chaswanah aspires to can be achieved for schools abroad.
“Yes, I hope Chaswanah will go to the school she chooses without any problem. Toronto is still chosen because it is the best in the world. She wants to go, I hope she can go , because Canada is quite a distance,” he said. .
