Jakarta (ANTARA) – Players from Canadian clubs participating in Major League Soccer (MLS) Toronto FC are dominating the Canadian U-17 national team at the 2023 U-17 World Cup in Indonesia, from November 10 to December 2, 2023.
Quoted on the official Canadian football website, coach Andrew Olivieri named 21 players, 10 of whom came from Toronto FC’s youth team.
The ten names are Nathaniel Abraham, Alexander O’Brien, Dominic Kantorowicz, Chimere Omeze, Lazar Stefanovic, Theo Rigopoulos, Philip Igbinobaro, Richard Chukwu, Tyler Londono and Lucas Ozimec.
“This is the kind of culminating event that Canada’s most talented and promising young people need to experience on their journey to the highest levels of world soccer,” said Andrew Olivieri, Canada Soccer’s National Men’s Youth Excel Director.
“A disciplined and courageous collective performance in Indonesia will be exactly what the team needs to take their programme to the knockout stages for the first time at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. A performance at this championship could also help boost the careers of some of these young men,” he added.
Of the 21 names called, 17 were players who had played for Canadian clubs. The other four names were players who had played in foreign competitions, such as Antoni Klukowski of Polish club Pogo Szczecin, Victor Fung of American club Inter Miami CF Academy, Erik Pop of German club Karlsruher FC U-19 and Lino Aklil of French club HSC Montpellier.
Canada is in Group B of the U-17 World Cup with Mali, Spain and Uzbekistan. Canada will play the first two matches, against Spain (November 10) and Uzbekistan (November 13) at Manahan Stadium in Solo. The final match against Mali (November 16) will be played at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya.
