A major Toronto food bank is seeking urgent donations after flooding from heavy rains earlier this week damaged its facilities and caused large quantities of food to go to waste.

North York Harvest Food Bank said the loading dock at its facility was flooded and water entered its warehouse.

A large quantity of refrigerated food, including milk, cheese, meat and children’s snacks, was destroyed due to the power outage.

The food bank said its staff managed to salvage some items, but one of its delivery trucks was also damaged by the flooding.

The North York Harvest Food Bank says it serves about 25,000 people each month.

More than 100 millimetres of rain were reported in Toronto on Tuesday, causing flooding and power outages across the city.
