Jakarta (ANTARA) – Coco Gauff overcame 13 double faults to beat Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and advance to the third round of the WTA Toronto Masters, with top seed Iga Swiatek also advancing to the round.
Gauff, who lost to Swiatek in the French Open final this year, stopped Rybakina 6-4, 6-7 (8/10), 7-6 (7/3).
Gauff missed four chances to end this match in straight sets.
Rybakina looked set to win this match, but Gauff eventually won after converting her fifth match point.
Both players are making their first appearances in French-speaking Montreal after making their Canadian debut a year ago in Toronto.
Gauff lost serve three times but broke Rybakina four times.
Meanwhile, Swiatek came through unscathed after beating Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-2 in 55 minutes in the second round.
The Polish top seed, who has won six titles this season, had nine break points, six of which he saved.
Swiatek is playing in her second tournament since losing to Alize Cornet in the third round at Wimbledon last month, ending a 37-game winning streak.
