Trudeau pledges to double Canadian military presence in Latvia

As head of NATO’s Forward Presence Battlegroup in Latvia, Canada said Trudeau would double military power in the Baltic country as part of defending the West.

“Canada will more than double its military presence in Latvia,” he said while at the Latvian military base in Adazi, quoted by The defense post Tuesday (11/7).

Trudeau said the increase included the deployment of 1,200 additional members of the Canadian Armed Forces aimed at defending democracy and the rule of law at the border.

“The additional troops will strengthen and improve our land, sea and air capabilities and support special operations in Central and Eastern Europe,” he said.

In addition, Trudeau said, Canada has also allocated US$2.6 billion (39 trillion rupees) to purchase critical weapons and equipment needed for intelligence and cyber activities.

“This is just one more way for Canada to support our allies and resist Kremlin aggression,” Trudeau said.

Latvia is Trudeau’s last stop before heading to Lithuania for a two-day NATO summit July 11-12.
