“Up to eight bodies have now been recovered from the waters. All are believed to have attempted to illegally enter the United States from Canada,” local police said at a news conference on Friday (31/ 3).
charge IndiaTodayOn Saturday (1/4), according to Akwesasne Deputy Mohawk Police Chief Lee-Ann O’Brien, the bodies were confirmed to belong to two families, one of Romanian descent and the other of of Indian origin, which were found in the water.
By Thursday (30/3), local police had already found six bodies scattered across the border, with the bodies first found in a swamp at Tsi Sunshine in Akwesasne.
Several months ago, police were also reporting a growing number of illegal migrants in the border area, smuggling through land, residents’ waterways to the shores of the St. Lawrence River, which is often dangerous.
In response to the latest incident this time around, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences and promised to downplay similar incidents in the future.
“It’s a heartbreaking situation. We need to fully understand what happened, how it happened and do everything we can to reduce the chances of it happening again,” he said.
More recently, US Presidents Joe Biden and Trudeau have sought such a solution, with both sides agreeing to prevent asylum seekers from coming to Canada through the unofficial border crossing from Quebec and New York.
