Uruguay beats Canada to reach third place at Copa America

Copa America News 2024: Uruguay managed to beat Canada on penalties in the third-place match of the Copa America 2024 on Saturday (13/07) local time.

Luis Suarez scored a late equalizer in a 2-2 draw at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The match was full of drama and tension, with both teams putting in their best performances until the final second.

Uruguay opened the scoring through Rodrigo Bentancur, who scored in regulation time. However, Canada put up a fierce fight with goals from Jonathan David and Ismael Kone, which gave them a 2-1 lead before Suarez finally equalized in the dying minutes. Suarez’s goal was the deciding factor that forced the match to a penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Sergio Rochet performed brilliantly as he saved Canada’s Ismael Kone’s penalty. Apart from that, Canadian defender Alphonso Davies’ shot hit the crossbar, which further strengthened Uruguay’s position. The penalty shootout ended 4-3 in favour of Uruguay, with Suarez and Bentancur also converting their penalties successfully.

“It was a tough blow in the previous match, but we knew we had to be mentally prepared because it’s not the same thing between finishing third and fourth,” Rochet told DSports.

“We tried hard against Canada, but the fatigue was evident. We equalised with a great goal from Suarez and we went to penalties.”

For Canada, finishing fourth in their Copa America 2024 debut is a proud achievement. While they failed to win a medal, their performances throughout the tournament showed the great potential this team has to compete at the highest level.
