Uruguay successfully secured third place at the 2024 Copa America after beating Canada on penalties with a score of 4-3 (2-2).
Canada vs Uruguay in the battle for third place in the Copa America 2024 took place at the Bank of America Stadium, Sunday (14/7) morning WIB.
In the eighth minute, Uruguay managed to take a 1-0 lead thanks to a shot from Rodrigo Bentancur. Then in the 18th minute, Uruguayan winger Maximiliano Araujo threatened the Canadian defense. However, his shot was still blocked by the Canadian goalkeeper.
In the 22nd minute, Canadian player Ismael Kone managed to score an overhead kick without looking at the goal to make it 1-1. Kone freed himself to escape the offside trap, then executed an overhead kick to follow his teammate’s header.
In the 24th minute, Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellestri managed to get into Canada’s goal. However, the goal was disallowed because it was initially ruled offside.
There were no further goals scored until the end of the first half. Canada vs Uruguay ended 1-1 in the first half.
In the 80th minute, Jonathan David managed to give Canada a 2-1 lead over Uruguay. The goal started with Kone’s shot being blocked by the goalkeeper, then David slotted the rebound into the net.
In the 87th minute, the Canadian players were very disappointed as they lost a counterattack just after the ball hit the referee while they were already ahead in number of players.
Canada coach Jesser March was seen holding his head and then crouching down because he was disappointed with the referee’s decision to stop the game as his team launched a counterattack.
In the 90+4th minute, Luis Suarez finally managed to save Uruguay with a shot that leveled the score at 2-2 after following Gimenez’s pass.
Until the end of the match, no further goals were scored. Canada against Uruguay drew in the second half and went to penalties.
In the penalty shootout, Canada’s first kicker, Jonathan David, did his job well. Then, Uruguay’s first goal scorer, Valverde, also managed to equalize 1-1.
Then Canada’s second kicker, Bombito, also managed to take the penalty perfectly and Bentancur responded to make the score 2-2.
Then, Canada’s third kicker, Kone, failed after his penalty was blocked by the Uruguayan goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Uruguay’s third goal scorer, De Arrascaeta, did his part well to give Uruguay a 3-2 lead.
Then the fourth Canadian kicker, Choiniere, did a good job, but Luis Suarez managed to answer, so the score was 3-4.
Unfortunately, Canada’s fifth kicker, Davies, failed to score a penalty after his header hit the crossbar. Canada also lost 3-4 on penalties. Uruguay has the right to reach third place at the 2024 Copa America.
