US and South Korea Collaborate to Develop Advanced Air Mobility

The FAA is considering developing a vertical landing airlift.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON — The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has agreed to partner with Korea Civil Aviation Bureau (KOCA) in the development and operation of future Advanced Air Mobility aircraft. The two countries signed a statement to collaborate and share information on advanced air mobility projects and cooperate to promote safety oversight of advanced air mobility projects.

“Working with our international partners to safely integrate this new technology will create more efficient, sustainable and equitable transportation options,” the acting administrator said. FAA Billy Nolen as reported ReutersSunday (01/08/2023).

The announcement comes as businesses around the world race to expand. It later gained regulatory approval to use low-altitude air taxis known as electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The FAA previously announced similar partnerships with Japan, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in its network of national aviation authorities.

This is to align certification and integration plans for advanced air mobility projects. Airlines and others are looking to develop transportation services using battery-powered planes that can take off and land vertically to ferry travelers to airports or on short trips between cities, allowing them to beat traffic.

Last month, the FAA published airworthiness criteria that Archer Aviation must meet in order for its M001 air taxi to be certified. The FAA has released its Archer eVTOL public comment criteria, after making a similar announcement in November for Joby Aviation’s JAS4-1 eVTOL model.
