Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said an “unidentified object” was shot down over Canadian airspace on his orders.
“Ordered to shoot down an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace. @NORADCommand shot down an object over the Yukon. Canadian and American planes were launched and American F-22s fired with success on an object,” Trudeau wrote in a tweet. CNNSunday (12/2/2023).
Trudeau said he had spoken to US President Joe Biden and that Canadian troops would lead the search for the object.
Meanwhile, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand tweeted that she had discussed the incident with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
“And reaffirmed that we will always defend our common sovereignty,” he stressed.
Earlier, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said it was monitoring a “high altitude aerial object” over northern Canada and that military aircraft were operating in the area from the Alaska and Canada, according to a news release from the agency.
It is unclear what the object was or if it is related to what is believed to be the Chinese spy balloon shot down last week or another mystery object shot down over Alaska on Friday or Saturday.
