Verstappen hopes Alonso can win in Canada

F1 News: Max Verstappen is backing Fernando Alonso to win the F1 Grand Prix of Canada race this week.

Speaking to the BBC ahead of the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix race, Verstappen admitted he would love to see Alonso win again if he didn’t due to his motivation despite slipping into a midfield machine for so many years.

“If you ask me a rider I would like to see win a race, that’s it,” said the Dutchman before the race.

“I like him. He never gives up and you can see he loves the sport. Sometimes after years of just having a car that goes into midfield maybe you lose a bit of that love but he’s a real racer. He’s an animal.

The Red Bull Racing ace can level up by equaling Ayrton Senna’s record of 41 wins if he wins in Montreal this weekend.

Even so, the defending champions refuse to draw too many comparisons to the past.

“People always have different types of careers. Maybe some drivers get into winning cars faster than others,” he said.

“Right now we have more races than ever before, so I’ve never really looked at the numbers, but as a kid I never imagined being on that list. It’s been an incredible career, but you can’t compare it.”
