Badminton News: Danish badminton star Viktor Axelsen withdrew from the Indonesia Masters 2023 tournament this week, shortly after losing in the India Open Super 750 final to Kunlavut Vitidsarn on Sunday. It was his second appearance in the finals in two consecutive weeks.
“Hello everyone. Unfortunately, I won’t be going to Indonesia next week. I can’t wait to play Istora in front of the amazing Indonesian badminton fans as usual, but my body is not ready for a another week of competition. in touch soon and thank you thank you for your support,” Axelsen wrote in a Twitter post.
The Dane won a world record seven Super Series titles in 2022. However, minutes after his loss to Vitidsarn in New Delhi, he complained about BWF’s tour schedule, calling it ‘very difficult’ .
“There are so many tournaments on the world circuit now…you can’t play them all and do well all year round. Having a 5-6 hour flight, going from Malaysia and then flying to India through time zones, and coming back to the same time zone, from a health perspective, and everything, that’s not good and I hope we can do better,” Axelsen said in an interview with PTI on Sunday.
Viktor Axelsen also said that he will only participate in the next selective tournaments. “There is a world championship in Denmark, which I really want to do. Super 1000 is something I really prioritize. Last week I won one and hopefully I can do it again at All England.”
No. 1 men’s singles player in the world won the opening tournament of the season at the Malaysian Open, a Super Series Premier level tournament, on January 15 in Kuala Lumpur.
On Sunday, in a three-game marathon battle, Viktor Axelsen lost to rising star Vitidsarn 20-22, 21-10, 12-21 in an hour and four minutes. The world No. 8 player from Thailand has become the fourth badminton player to beat Axelsen on the BWF World Tour in the past two years.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF), in 2022, elevated the status of tournaments worldwide, taking the sport around the world, including Finland and Canada, giving the tournaments Super Series status there.
As the Olympic qualifying cycle begins in May, it will be hard for top players to skip the tournament.
