Prime Minister (PM) Canada Justin Trudeau condemned the harsh verbal attack on Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland who is also Minister of Finance (Menkeu). Trudeau mentions verbal attack such as “deeply disturbing harassment”.
“We have seen more and more people in public life and people in positions of power, especially women, Canadians who are victims of racism, minorities or different community groups, being targeted because of the growing power of your voice,” Trudeau said. as reported by ReutersMonday (29/8/2022).
“We are seeing a backlash… We have to ask ourselves what kind of country are we, what kind of country do we want to be,” he added.
In a video of the incident that was shared on Twitter at midnight local time on Friday, Freeland was heading for the elevator at City Hall in Grande Prairie, Alta., when a man suddenly yelled at him.
“What are you doing in Alberta? the man shouted harshly as Freeland headed for the elevator. The man also called Freeland a “traitor” and a “whore”. The video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
Freeland is known to have been born in Alberta and is currently visiting the province to meet with local officials, employers and workers. He acknowledged the incident in a statement via Twitter on Saturday (8/27) local time.
“What happened yesterday was wrong. No one anywhere should face threats and intimidation,” he wrote via Twitter.
