It is a four-day celebration that usually takes place every January, a time when the poor, rich, villagers and city dwellers of Tamil society give thanks to the gods, worship the sun, earth, livestock and their gifts with devotion.
Acknowledging that there are many Tamil communities around the world, particularly in India and Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted a video of himself speaking Tamil to wish the festival a happy Pongal. The Tamil community is also found in Canada
“This week, the Tamil community in Canada and around the world will celebrate Thai Pongal, the harvest festival. During this annual four-day festival, families and loved ones come together to thank nature for a bountiful harvest season,” Trudeau said in a video posted to his Twitter account.
He shared that over the years he has seen the excitement of this festival where families come together and share traditional savory or sweet dishes with rice boiled in milk.
“January also marks Tamil Heritage Month in Canada, an opportunity for us to celebrate Tamil culture and heritage, and the continued contribution of Canadian Tamils to building a better, stronger and more inclusive Canada.
Trudeau sees that the Tamil community has strong roots in his country, including in the social and economic fabric, which makes Canada so diverse as it is so rich and vibrant.
“Let’s build a country where more Canadians can celebrate their traditions, embrace their heritage and live their faith and religion with pride,” said Treadeau, who then concluded his speech with congratulations.
“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish you a Happy Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month. Iniya Thai Pongal Valthukkal,” he said.
In 2016, the Canadian Parliament designated January as Tamil Heritage Month, in recognition of the contributions of Canadian Tamil citizens.
Thai Pongal for the Tamil people is also a national holiday. Schools and most businesses are closed.
