Jakarta (ANTARA) – Lucas Cavallini scored a stoppage-time penalty to give Canada a 2-1 friendly victory over Japan in Dubai on Thursday before the two teams travel to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.
Japanese goalkeeper Shuchi Gonda appeared to have saved Cavallini’s penalty but eventually missed it.
The Vancouver Whitecaps striker became the penalty taker after the referee pointed the point due to Miki Yamane’s foul on Richie Laryea in the 93rd minute.
Japan opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Yuki Soma headed in Gaku Shibasaki’s cross in front of goal.
Canada equalized 12 minutes later when Steven Vitoria turned the ball into the net for Japan after Atiba Hutchinson spun into the corner from Junior Hoilett.
Canada is participating in its first World Cup since 1986, taking on Belgium, Canada and Morocco in Group F.
They begin their adventure by facing Belgium in their opening match on November 23.
Japan, meanwhile, are in Group E along with Germany, Spain and Costa Rica, and will face Germany on November 23 in their opening game.
