WTA roundup: Canada takes center stage in Tokyo quarterfinals

Canadian Bianca Andreescu advanced to the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Wednesday after a back injury forced second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil to withdraw.

Andreescu led 3-0 at the end of the match with Haddad Maia looking unwell. After several setbacks and a lot of rest due to his own injuries, he is looking for the fourth title of his career. Her previous three matches all took place in 2019, and this will be her first quarterfinal at the WTA 500 level or above since 2022.

Another Canadian also advanced to the quarterfinals when Leylah Fernandez beat No. 8 seed Varvara Gracheva of France 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. The number 6 seed, Russian Diana Shnaider, had no difficulty beating Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Shnaider will next meet Sayaka Ishii after the Japanese qualifier beat Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Opening of Guangzhou

Defending champion Xiyu Wang survived a marathon third set to beat fellow Chinese Sijia Wei 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 and advance to the quarterfinals in his home country.

Wang won the two-hour, 18-minute match when he used his fourth break point on Wei’s serve to stay in the match in the third set, which lasted about half the match. Wang converted five of 11 break chances and Wei was only able to score two goals.

In the next round, Wang will face Italian Lucia Bronzetti who beat Romanian Jaqueline Cristian 7-6 (5), 6-4. Also advancing to the quarterfinals was seventh-seeded Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who beat China’s Shi Han 6-3, 6-4 and Serbia’s Olga Danilovic. Danilovic beat fifth-seeded Diane Parry of France 6-1, 6-0 in 74 minutes.
