12 National Heroes Of North Sumatra Freedom Fighters, Here Are The Numbers

SuaraSumut.id – in the moment Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) on August 17, recall the services of the national hero who fought to gain and maintain independence.

The government has named 185 men and 15 women national heroes. This highest honor is given to those who have made a great contribution to the interests of the nation and the state.

There are also national heroes who come from North Sumatra (North Sumatra), here is the figure:

1. Sisingamangaraja XII

Sisingamangaraja XII, whose full name is Patuan Bosar Sinambela ginoar Ompu Pulo Batu, was born in Bakkara, Humbang Hasundutan on February 18, 1845.

This legendary leader of the Batak people ascended the throne in 1876 to replace his father, King Sisingamangaraja XI, named Ompu Sohahuaon. His coronation as the 12th king coincided with the entry of the Dutch into North Sumatra.

At that time, the Dutch attempted to establish a monopoly on trade in Bakkara. This started the Batak War led by Sisingamangaraja XII for decades.

After the Dutch occupied Bakkara, he continued to lead guerrilla warfare until he was shot by the Dutch at Dairi along with his three sons and daughters. Sisingamangaraja XII died in Dairi, June 17, 1907. He was buried in Tarutung, North Tapanuli and then transferred to Balige in 1953 by Ir Soekarno.

In addition to being awarded the title of National Hero of Indonesia, the government has enshrined the name Sisingamangaraja XII as the name of roads in many parts of Indonesia. An illustration of the face of Sisingamangaraja XII is also embedded in the Rp 1,000 note.

2. Ginning Guarantor

TNI Lieutenant General Jamin Ginting was born in Karo on January 12, 1921. He is a figure from North Sumatra, a freedom fighter who opposed the Dutch government in the East Indies. He died on October 23, 1974 in Ottawa, Canada.

Lieutenant General Jamin Ginting’s name is immortalized as the name of the 80 kilometer road that stretches from Medan City to Karo Regency.

The Medan City Government also erected a statue of Lieutenant General Jamin Ginting which was unveiled on June 28, 2022 by the Mayor of Medan, Bobby Nasution. Statue of Lieutenant General Jamin Ginting to mark the zero kilometer of Jalan Jamin Ginting in Medan.

3. Kiras wakes up

Kiras Bangun alias Garamata, was born in Kampung Batu Karang, Karo, in 1852. During his life he mobilized inter-religious forces in North Sumatra and Karo to oppose Dutch colonialism. Kiras managed to muster around 3,000 soldiers.

Kiras Bangun died on October 22, 1942 and was buried in Batukarang Village, Payung, Karo Regency. He was awarded the title of National Hero of Indonesia by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on November 9, 2005.

4. AH Nasution

General TNI Abdul Haris Nasution was born in Kotanopan, North Sumatra on December 3, 1918. He was originally a member of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL), but after the Japanese invasion he was joined Defenders of the Homeland (PETA).

After the proclamation of independence, he enlisted in the nascent Indonesian Armed Forces and fought in the Indonesian National Revolution. In 1965, a coup attempt took place, then officially blamed on the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI).

Nasution’s house is attacked and his daughter is killed, but he manages to escape by climbing a wall and hiding in the residence of the Iraqi ambassador. AH Nasution passed away in Jakarta on September 6, 2000. Besides receiving an award as a national hero, AH Nasution’s name was also listed as a street name in Medan.

5. Tahi Bonar Simatupang

Tahi Bonar Simatupang or TB Simatupang was born in Sidikalang, January 28, 1920. He was a military figure and a church figure in Indonesia. TB Simatupang died in 1990 in Jakarta and was buried in Kalibata Heroes Cemetery.

The name TB Simatupang was later immortalized as a street name in Medan. Then, on December 19, 2016, for his services, the government of the Republic of Indonesia listed him in new denominations of rupees, Rp. 500.

6. Adam Malik

H. Adam Malik Batubara was born in Pematang Siantar on July 22, 1917. He is a former journalist who was the third vice-president. Adam Malik also pioneered the birth of the Antara news agency. He died in Bandung on September 5, 1984.

Adam Malik was designated as one of the National Heroes of Indonesia on November 6, 1998 based on Presidential Decree No. 107/TK/1998. His name is also immortalized as the name of the hospital and the names of streets in Medan.

7. Amir Hamzah

Tengku Amir Hamzah was born in Tanjung Pura, Langkat on February 28, 1911. He is an Indonesian Poedjangga Baroe class writer and a national hero of Indonesia.
Born into an aristocratic Malay family from the Sultanate of Langkat in North Sumatra, he was educated in Sumatra and Java.

While attending high school in Surakarta around 1930, young Amir became involved in the nationalist movement. Amir Hamzah died in Kwala Begumit, Binjai on March 20, 1946. Amir Hamzah was declared one of Indonesia’s national heroes in 1975.

A park is named after him, Taman Amir Hamzah, located in Jakarta near the national monument. Moreover, the name Amir Hamzah is also immortalized as a street name in Medan.

8. Lafran section

Lafran Lane was born in Sipirok, Padang Sidempuan on February 5, 1992. He died at the age of 69 in Yogyakarta on January 24, 1991. He was known as a figure in the youth movement and initiated the formation of the Association of Islamic Students on February 5, 1947.

9. Zainul Arifin

KH Zainul Arifin was born in Barus, South Tapanuli (Tapsel) on September 2, 1909.
During the era of Japanese military occupation, he also represented NU in the management of the Indonesian Muslim Council of Syuro (Masyumi) and was involved in the formation of Hezbollah’s semi-military force.

Amid rising political temperature, on May 14, 1962, during Eid al-Adha prayers in the foreground with Sukarno, Zainul was shot dead by a bullet aimed at a rebel DI/TII in his attempt to kill the president .

He died on March 2, 1963 after being shot in the shoulder for ten months. Besides being given the title of national hero, Zainul Arifin’s name has been immortalized as a street name in Medan.

10. Ferdinand Lumban Tobing

Dr. Ferdinand Lumban Tobing or FL Tobing was born in Sibuluan, Sibolga on February 19, 1899. While working as a doctor at CBZ for several years, he was subsequently reassigned frequently. In 1931, he was transferred to Surabaya and assigned to the department of internal medicine.

In 1935, he was again transferred to the region of Tapanuli, his hometown. In the Tapanuli region, he was first stationed in Padang Sidempuan, then transferred to Sibolga, the capital of the Tapanuli residence.

When World War II broke out, accompanied by the transfer of power in Indonesia from the Netherlands to Japan in 1942, Dr. Ferdinand Lumban Tobing.

Dr. FL Tobing died in Jakarta on October 7, 1962 at the age of 63. He was buried in the village of Kolang, in the central regency of Tapanuli, North Sumatra. His name was later immortalized at a general hospital in Sibolga and at an airport in Pinangsori, central Tapanuli.

11. In Panjaitan

Major General (Mayjen) Donald Isaac Panjaitan was born in Balige on June 19, 1925.
He and other youths formed the People’s Security Army (TKR) during independence, which later became the TNI.

He was killed at midnight on October 1, 1965, when a group of 30 September Movement members broke into and opened fire on Pandjaitan’s house in Jalan Hasanuddin, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.

12. Sutan Mohammed Amin Nasution

Sutan Mohammad Amin Nasution was born in Lho’Nga Aceh on February 22, 1904. He was a lawyer and politician of Batak/mandailing origin. In 1946, he was appointed as the first young governor of North Sumatra, which included the Tapanuli residence, East Sumatra and Aceh.

On June 19, 1948, Sutan Mohammad Amin Nasution was appointed by President Sukarno as Governor of North Sumatra. He died at the age of 89 and was buried at Tanah Kusir TPU, South Jakarta on April 16, 1993.

On November 10, 2020, Sutan Mohammad Amin Nasution was named a National Hero by President Joko Widodo.
