More than 155,000 civil servants in various regions Canada threaten to do strike at the national level, if an agreement is not reached with the government on living wages and other requests.
As reported AFPOn Tuesday (18/4/2023) the employees threatening to strike are government employees who work in more than 20 departments, including the Canada Revenue Agency, but who have not had a contract since 2021 .
They held a vote last week and chose to strike.
Canadian public service union officials say the government and party are at odds over wages, job security and remote working conditions.
“These workers – like all other workers – deserve fair wages and decent working conditions. Despite progress at the bargaining table, our members feel frustrated because as negotiations drag on, they continue to struggle. delay,” National President for the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), Chris Aylward, told a news conference.
“We’ve been at the bargaining table for almost two years, and these workers can’t wait any longer. That’s why we’ve set the time for a round of bargaining,” he explained.
If an agreement is not reached on Tuesday (18/4) evening around 9:00 p.m. local time, a national strike will be called on Wednesday (19/4) afternoon around 12:01 p.m. local time.
