2023 Sudirman Cup schedule: The fight for the return of the trophy begins, Indonesia challenged by Canada

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – The Indonesian badminton team played their first match at the 2023 Sudirman Cup. The goal was to get the win to pave the way for the title.

This time the tournament was held in Suzhou, China from May 14-21. Indonesia entered Group B along with Thailand, Germany and Canada.

Indonesia won the first edition of the Sudirman Cup in 1989. However, this title was the only honor for the Red and Whites so far. In the last edition of 2021, Merah Putih was eliminated in the quarter-finals after being beaten by Malaysia 2-3.

“We left for Suzhou with a big mission. It’s to win back the Sudirman Cup. We have been waiting for the symbol of world supremacy in mixed team badminton for 34 years and we have not been able to return to Indonesia,” said team manager Armand Darmadji.

With the famine in Indonesia, China emerged victorious in 12 editions. Meanwhile, South Korea has won four times. Plus Japan and Denmark, the four countries will be Indonesia’s biggest competitors in this event.

“All are compact and have great enthusiasm to bring back the Sudirman Cup. We are still united and passionate. Hopefully this positive thing can be maintained,” Sudirman Cup team captain Fajar Alfian said.
