Ukraine’s defense forces said they saw the massive attack on Odessa port as revenge for Ukraine’s attack on a Russian naval base in Crimea last Friday.

“Russian missiles hit a hotel in Odessa last night,” the Ukrainian Defense Forces said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“A pathetic attempt at retaliation for our successful attack on the Russian Navy base in Sevastopol,” the tweet added.

Both regions have been repeatedly targeted by suspected Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory. So far, kyiv has remained silent in the face of such attacks.

The Defense Ministry also said four Ukrainian drones were destroyed in the northwestern part of the Black Sea and in Russian-occupied Crimea. It is not yet known whether there was any damage or injuries as a result of the reported attack.

Production of weapons and defense systems in the United States and Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his evening speech on Sunday that the United States had agreed to jointly produce weapons with kyiv.

“There is a historic decision by the United States to jointly produce weapons and defense systems. Particularly air defense. It was an absolute fantasy until now. But it will become a reality. We will achieve it,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky spent the past week in the United States and Canada, having attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York before speaking separately with President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“It was a productive week. Very productive. We made a lot of good defensive decisions and other decisions,” Zelensky said.

He said the U.S. defense program includes artillery, bullets, HIMARS munitions, air defense missiles, supplemental air defense systems and tactical vehicles, as well as several other types of weapons that would prove capable of surviving on the battlefield.

“We have received a decision from Canada regarding long-term defense support of half a billion US dollars. In particular medical evacuation vehicles which are urgently needed on the front lines… We have agreed on their production and supply,” he added.

US provides 8 trillion rupiah for Ukraine’s energy system

Ukrainian wheat exports in free fall

Ukraine’s grain exports between September 1 and 24 amounted to 1.57 million tons, down sharply from 3.21 million tons in the same period last year. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture released Monday, this figure is down 51%.

Agricultural and trade unions say Ukraine’s blockade of Black Sea ports and recent Russian attacks on Ukraine’s Danube ports are the main reasons for the decline in exports.

Ministry data shows that Ukraine has so far exported a total of 6.2 million tonnes of grain in the July-June 2023-2024 season, compared to 7.5 million tonnes in the same period of the previous season.

The volume includes almost 3 million tonnes of wheat, 2.5 million tonnes of corn and 599,000 tonnes of barley.

Ukraine traditionally ships most of its exports via deep-water ports in the Black Sea.

Ukraine is able to export limited quantities via small river ports on the Danube and via its western land border with the European Union.
