Who knew LockBit ever apologized for its actions against a children’s hospital SickKids in Toronto, Canada. LockBit has issued a rare apology after claiming that one of its partners was responsible for the cyberattack on one of Canada’s largest children’s hospitals.

Reported per page Engadget in January 2023, SickKids suffered a ransomware attack that prevented the facility from accessing many of its critical systems on December 18, 2023. The incident delayed patient wait times.

As of December 29, 2023, SickKids said it has regained access to nearly 50% of its priority systems, including systems that caused diagnostic and treatment delays.

Independent security analyst Dominic Alvieri first came across a LockBit article dated December 31, 2022. “We officially apologize for the attack on sikkids.ca and refund descrambler free. The partner who attacked this hospital violated our rules, was banned and is no longer part of our affiliate program,” LockBit wrote in the post.

SickKids confirms that no personal or private health information was affected and did not pay a ransom. As of January 1, 2023, the hospital had restored more than 60% of priority systems.

It’s unclear why it took LockBit almost two weeks to remediate the attack on SickKids if it was against its rules. It should be noted, however, that this does not mean that LockBit excludes hospitals for its ransomware attacks. Indeed, LockBit has already attacked the Center Hospitalier Sud Francilien in France and demanded a ransom of 1 million US dollars, or nearly 15 billion rupees. The hospital refused to pay and eventually LockBit leaked patient data.

In September 2022, LockBit was responsible for 48% of all ransomware attacks, almost six times more than Black Basta (the other biggest ransomware gang).
