Rasmus Kjær and Frederik Søgaard pulled off a stunning upset by beating Chinese Taipei’s fourth-seeded pair Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in just two games, 21-17, 21-9.
Likewise, Magnus Johannesen won big over sixth-seeded Hong Kong ace Lee Cheuk Yiu with a solid 21-13, 22-20 victory.
Julien Carraggi’s impressive form continued against Israeli Misha Zilberman. In a battle between two strong European athletes, Carraggi won back-to-back matches, 23-21, 21-13. The Belgian’s excellent performance on his Super 500 debut undoubtedly caught the eye.
While several Europeans faced defeat in the round of 16 at the 2023 Canada Open, they did not go down without a fight. Julie Dawall Jakobsen delivered a spirited performance against the current world number one women’s singles player, Akane Yamaguchi.
The Denmark player showed his tenacity, won the first game, but eventually lost to the rubber game, 15-21, 21-17 and 21-16.
Jenjira Stadelmann, who recently won a bronze medal at the European Games, also had a strong performance against China’s Gao Fang Jie. Despite his best efforts, Stadelmann said goodbye to the tournament, narrowly losing the second game, 14-21, 20-22.
