F1 News: Sergio Perez failed to finish several times in the first half of F1 2022 but still believes he can claim the drivers’ title.
Sergio Perez managed to claim his second victory in the premier class of the Monaco GP series. This feat puts him 15 points ahead of his partner, Max Verstappen, and leads the drivers’ classification.
While Verstappen has won four of six races since the Monaco Grand Prix, Perez has only managed to finish second twice in the same period and failed to finish twice at the Canadian GP and the GP from Austria.
This makes the gap between the two very large, namely 85 points ahead of the last nine races. Not only in Montreal and Spielberg, Perez also failed to finish the Bahrain Grand Prix.
“This season is still very long,” Perez said as quoted by Motorsport.com.
“What really killed the first half of my season was the DNF (failure to finish). Without this DNF, my championship would be very different from what it is now,” he added.
“So yes. But overall I think there are a lot of positives to take from this half of the season.”
The reliability issue is something that Sergio Perez fears, including the fuel pump problem that hit him in Bahrain. After that, problems with the gearbox forced the 32-year-old to return to the garage early in Canada.
While in Austria, a terrible incident after the start of the race also implicated him. As a result, Perez was unable to continue the race due to car damage.
Still, he was able to show a very good performance with the RB18 car, compared to driving a land plane last season, the RB16B. It also prompted Red Bull to extend his contract until 2024, which he signed before winning the Monaco Grand Prix.
When asked about his performance in the first half of F1 2022, Sergio Perez gave a pretty high score.
“I think it’s been a very good first part of the season, very complete, bringing together good races, good results and of course consistency,” he said.
“I think it’s there, and everything is open in the championship,” he concluded.
