JAKARTA – In response to the News Act (UU). Online Adopted in June 2023, Meta has officially decided to block the distribution of news in Canada via its social media.
Canadian citizens, effective August 1, 2023, will no longer be able to see news links and content posted by that country’s news publishers and broadcasters, both on Facebook and Instagram.
“In order to comply with the Online News Act, we have begun the process to end the availability of news in Canada. We have identified news outlets based on legislative definitions and guidelines of the online news law,” Meta said in its announcement, quoted on Wednesday, August 2.
This new policy does not apply to publishers and newscasters outside of Canada, they will continue to be able to post news links and content. However, the content is not visible to people from that country.
“There are no changes to our service for people accessing our technology outside of Canada,” Meta said.
Meta is obliged to apply these new rules
Almost a year ago, Meta raised concerns about the Online News Act that would force it to consider whether to continue allowing news content to be shared on the platform.
“We’ve been transparent and made it clear to the Government of Canada that the law distorts the value media outlets receive when they choose to use our platform,” Meta said.
According to Meta, the law is based on a false premise where companies are accused of benefiting unfairly from news content shared on the platform.
“Media voluntarily share content on Facebook and Instagram to grow their audience and improve their results. In contrast, we know that people who use our platforms don’t come to us for information,” Meta explained.
“The only way we can reasonably comply with this law is to end the availability of the news to people in Canada,” he added.
FYI, this rule only applies to news viewing on Meta’s social media, while Canadians can still use Facebook and Instagram to connect with friends, family and engage with their local community. .
