Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Immigrants are foreign citizens who leave their home country and settle in another country for various reasons. One of them is to improve their economy and seek employment opportunities.

Immigrants often target countries with rapid economic growth, such as Germany, Russia and others. Here are the countries that welcome the most immigrants, according to various sources.

United States (US)
As one of the countries with the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and the largest economic power in the world, the United States has always been the leading destination for immigrants from around the world. Improvements in the quality of life have led to a drastic increase in the number of immigrants and foreign residents settling in the United States.

German
The country welcomes 15 million immigrants. This is because the economy is strong, the infrastructure is well-developed, and the education system supports immigrants settling in Germany. Keep in mind that Germany only recruits qualified workers to live and work permanently in the country.

Saudi Arabia
Nearly a third of the Saudi population has a migrant background, or 13 million people. The numbers have increased more than in most other countries. In 2010 and 2015, the number of foreign-born residents in Saudi Arabia increased by approximately 93%. But the United Nations (UN) reports that the Saudi government has imposed new restrictions to limit immigration into the country.

Russia
Russia is one of the few countries that actively encourages immigration. Despite this, the number of immigrants to Russia has declined in recent years. There are approximately 12 million immigrants living in this country. The majority of these migrants come from Central Asian countries and former Soviet countries.

English
From 2000 to 2005, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland experienced extraordinary growth in its immigrant population, which almost doubled from 4.7 million to 8.5 million during this period. This increase coincided with a large influx of migrants from Eastern Europe following the accession of several countries to the European Union.

Currently, around 10 million immigrants live in the country. The three countries bringing the most immigrants to the UK are India, Poland and Pakistan.

United Arab Emirates
Immigrants who come to the UAE need to work rather than stay or seek asylum. There are approximately 8.7 million registered immigrants in this country and most come from South Asia and Southeast Asia.

French

Spain has also replaced Italy as the preferred destination for immigrants crossing the Mediterranean to enter Europe. Currently, around 6 million immigrants live in the country.

Italy
Around 5.8 million immigrants have occupied the country, leading the Italian government to declare a state of national emergency for six months after being overrun by 31,000 immigrants since the start of 2023. The move was taken to deal with a wave of immigrants arriving on the southern coast of the country. According to Reuters data, around 130,000 immigrants have currently arrived and are being hosted by the Italian government.

Türkiye
According to the latest data from the Presidency of Migration Management (PMM), there are currently more than 5.1 million foreign nationals in Turkey. At least 3.8 million of them have requested international protection. The majority are Syrians (3,435,298 people) who have been granted temporary protection status.
