Indonesia and Canada continue cooperation on halal product guarantees

Minister of Religion Yaqut Cholil Qoumas met with Mary Ng, Minister of Commerce, Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade of Canada, to discuss various collaborations, particularly in the area of ​​guarantee of halal products and education, at the residence of Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Jakarta, Saturday (19/8/2023).

Yaqut hopes that this meeting will be the start of an agreement on cooperation to ensure halal products in both countries.

“What is more important is what we can do to help Canada and vice versa for Indonesia. “Because the standards of each country are certainly different,” said Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Saturday (19/8/2023).

“In 2024, all foreign products will no longer be able to enter Indonesia if they do not have halal certification. This is a form of state protection for the community. “We hope that our products will also facilitate entry into Canada,” he continued.

Yaqut also asked the head of the Halal Product Guarantee Organizing Agency (BPJPH) to immediately follow up on the cooperation in the halal sector between the two countries so that it can be realized immediately.

Besides cooperation in the field of increasing halal guarantees, the meeting also discussed cooperation plans in the education sector.

According to Yaqut, Indonesia has four million students from Islamic boarding schools.

“We have four million students who we encourage to study abroad, including in Canada. The issue of education is also very important. “And the two countries can exchange promotions in the education sector,” underlined the Minister of Religion.

Meanwhile, Mary Ng, Canada’s Minister of Commerce, Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, expressed her thanks to the Minister of Religion and his staff for the friendly meeting.
