From year to year, the area of forest and land fires in Indonesia is decreasing. The area of forest and land fires reached 11 million hectares in 1997, fell to 10 million hectares in 2006, then only 2.6 million hectares in 2015 and 1.6 million hectares in 2019. “We have very strict laws to deal with environmental problems. , including forest and land fires,” he said. Regulations relating to the control of forest and land fires are contained in Law Number 41 of 1999 concerning Forestry, Law Number 32 of 2009 concerning environmental protection and management, various government regulations and even presidential instructions. The ministry has three aspects of control to continuously prevent forest and land fires which have been carried out since 2020. The first aspect, the control and analysis of climate or weather by tracking weather movements, was later developed into an analysis of forested and fire-prone locations to determine the location of weather modification or artificial rain operations. Second, carry out operational monitoring through an integrated task force involving the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, BNPB, BRIN, BMKG, TNI, Polri, Ministry of Interior, regional government and local communities. The task of the unit is to ensure early detection and preparedness for fighting fires on land and in the air, including awareness raising and law enforcement. The third aspect, through the control and management of landscape or land use, providing advice to land concession owners and forestry companies. Land control and management includes the adoption of traditional agriculture which often involves burning during clearing or after harvest. His party continues to control peatland oil palm plantations and various industrial forestry plantations, even taking them to court. The condition of peatlands has improved because companies are complying with government regulations. Thus, they were able to restore and maintain moist peat on approximately 3.7 million hectares. “They maintain conservation values. They also control the surrounding areas that burn and help (with extinction),” Siti said.
