The decision announced by the Saudi Foreign Ministry on Wednesday (24/5) puts an end to the dispute which began in 2018.
The move is a continuation of discussions held between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Bangkok in November last year.

Canada will appoint Jean-Philippe Linteau as its new ambassador to Riyadh.
The dispute between the two countries took place in 2018. At that time, Saudi Arabia expelled Canada's ambassador, withdrew its own ambassador from Ottawa and froze all new trade. This follows the Canadian Embassy in Riyadh posting a tweet in Arabic calling for the immediate release of women's rights activists detained by Saudi Arabia.
Riyadh viewed Canada's statement at the time as a violation of Saudi Arabia's sovereignty.
Following this dispute, Saudi Arabia also decided to suspend its flights, trade and scholarships with Canada.
