G20 focuses on data privacy, not cybersecurity

“So cybersecurity itself is actually not being discussed at the G20, but data privacy is something that we are discussing intensely,” said the Canadian delegate to the Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) of the G20, Iyad Dakka, to journalists on Tuesday (8/30) in Nusa Dua. , Bali.

He explained that personal data was an issue that had been extensively discussed at DEWG G20. In addition, one of the priority issues is the flow of data between countries.

The issue of data flows between countries is a discussion of community data sovereignty and global data governance. Moreover, Indonesia is considered a rapidly growing country in terms of internet users and ranks third in Asia, after China and India.

According to Yesad, the focus of the discussion was to strengthen the protection of electronic personal data systems which have so far been frequently used by a number of global technology platforms.

“When it comes to data flows and across borders, we can secure people’s privacy and that really depends on the digital economy, which means it’s tied to security for everyone,” said said Iyad, director of international affairs and trade policy at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

The fourth session of the G20 DEWG started on Monday (29/8) and ended on Tuesday (30/8). However, so far the results of the trial have not been announced to the media team.

During this meeting, delegates continued to discuss the draft G20 Digital Ministerial Declaration called “The Bali Package”.

Then, the draft declaration will be discussed again by the G20 digital ministers at the Digital Economy Ministers Meeting (DEMM) forum on September 1, 2022.

Canada is just one of a series of country delegates who attended the offline DEWG in Nusa Dua Bali. Several countries such as Australia, Brazil, India, China, European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Tukiye, the United Kingdom and the United States also participated in the closing session.

Meanwhile, an Argentine delegation was present virtually.
