Jakarta –
The UK government bans ICT Tac for use by government officials and employees. Downloading and installing the app on official government mobile devices is prohibited.
The UK’s move comes on top of similar restrictions imposed by allies in Canada, the European Union and the United States (US). The social media app is not widely used by UK authorities.
Reported CNN, Friday (17/3/2023), this ban was carried out due to concerns about TikTok’s relationship with the Chinese government through its parent company, ByteDance. Many fear that the TikTok app could allow the Chinese government to pressure the company to opt out of using their personal information.
Previously, Joe Biden’s US administration had asked the owners of the Chinese-registered TikTok app to back down from their actions or face a US ban. In a statement Thursday, ICT Tac expressed their disappointment with the ban decision in various countries.
“We believe this ban is based on a fundamental misunderstanding and is driven by broader geopolitics, in which TikTok and our millions of users in the UK have no role,” a spokesperson said.
Earlier, in December, President Joe Biden signed into law a ban ICT Tac on the federal government apparatus, joins a list of more than half of the US states.
On the other hand, US lawmakers have proposed expanding the authority of the Biden administration to impose a nationwide ban on TikTok.
