The dispute between the two countries took place in 2018. At that time, Saudi Arabia expelled the ambassador from Canada and withdrew its own ambassador from Ottawa and froze all new trade. It came after the Canadian Embassy in Riyadh posted a tweet in Arabic calling for the immediate release of the women’s rights activist detained by Saudi Arabia.
Riyadh then viewed Canada’s statement as a violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty.
Following the spat, Saudi Arabia also decided to suspend flights, trade and scholarships with Canada.
