Ahead of world championship, Rashid Sidek urges Lee Zii Jia and Ng Tze Yong to map opponent’s strength

Badminton News: Do your homework for the World Championships. That was Rashid Sidek’s advice to the men’s singles of Lee Zii Jia and Ng Tze Yong.

Rashid Sidek, a member of the 1992 Thomas Cup-winning squad, said the pair should study their potential opponents before flying to Copenhagen for the world championships next week.

Rashid said both players’ time management is very important, especially now, and should not be wasted on activities that may not be of much use.

Former England champion Lee Zii Jia, who has had a difficult season so far, will face fifth seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in the first round, while world number 22 Tze Yong will open the competition against Chinese Zhao Jun Peng.

The two Malaysian players could meet in the round of 16, but they must complete the second round first.

Zii Jia, who recently reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, is set to face Canadian Brian Yang, while Tze Yong is set to meet 2019 World Championships silver medalist Anders Antonsen of Denmark.

“There’s not much time left, whatever they have now should be used to study their possible opponents,” Rashid Sidek said.

“Players like Zii Jia and Tze Yong are already playing at the top level of badminton, as are their opponents. At this stage, anything is possible. My advice is to take the time they have, watch their draw and study their possible opponents,” he said. .

“Of course they have to get through the first round first, and both face tough opponents. It’s a world championship, the advantage goes to those who prepare well,” added Rashid.

Earlier, former world number one Lee Chong Wei said it was very important for Zii Jia and Tze Yong to quickly adapt to the conditions on the pitch at the Royal Arena, the venue for this year’s World Championships.

It should be noted that no Malaysian player in the men’s singles has qualified for the semi-finals since the shock defeat of Chong Wei in the first round of the 2017 edition in Glasgow.

Zii Jia’s assistant coach Liew Daren was the last Malaysian player to reach the semi-finals, which he did at the 2018 World Championships in Nanjing, China.
