Bawaslu President’s proposal to postpone simultaneous regional elections is baseless

This was conveyed by the director of the Democracy and Electoral Empowerment Partnership (DEEP), Neni Nur Hayati, to RMOL political news agencyFriday (14/7).

According to Neni, the reasons explained by President Bawaslu regarding the postponement of the 2024 simultaneous elections should actually pose a challenge for the organizers, including Bawaslu. Neni said that in a situation like that, Bawaslu should think about how to implement strategy, innovation and creativity in a difficult situation.

“The option of postponing the legislative elections which have been set for November 27, 2024 is not a solution to overcome the different dynamics conveyed by the President of Indonesian Bawaslu,” said Neni.

For Neni, Bawaslu should currently focus and concentrate on overseeing the process of holding honest, fair and clean elections. Don’t even start speeches that are not within your authority.

“It would be counterproductive and a crazy situation. This argument would encourage public opinion to postpone the election as a whole,” he explained.

Neni added that in the future, DEEP encourages election organizers to improve public communication even better. This is a very crucial thing given that the electoral stages are already underway and the implementation of the elections is also determined.

“From the point of view of political communication, the discussion on the postponement of regional elections conveyed by President Bawaslu is less ethical. Because we also know that the longer regional elections take place in many regions, the more they are directed by the PJS”, concluded Neni. .

Several reasons given by Bagja for simultaneously postponing the elections due to potential problems include: updating voter data, purchasing and distributing election logistics. Bagja even mentioned that the institutional relations between Bawaslu and the KPU have not been optimally developed. For example, in the context of drafting the KPU and Bawaslu regulations.
