Tennis News: The parallel between Canadian tennis player, Bianca Andreescu and British tennis player, Emma Raducanu has become an interesting story.
Both tennis players were born in Toronto and are of Romanian descent. Both players also won the US Open as youngsters on their Grand Slam debuts. Since winning their first Grand Slam titles of their careers, both players have faced a number of challenges related to injuries and inconsistency. Both players entered the first round of the 2023 Miami Open as unranked players.
Competing for 2 hours 33 minutes, the Canadian tennis player finally overthrew the British tennis player, Raducanu with 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
The 2021 Miami Open runners-up won their meeting in Rome last season after Raducanu pulled out of the match with a lower back injury while leading 6-2, 2-1. During this meeting, the two tennis players finished the match in three sets.
“You never know what to expect,” admits Andreescu. “I just came here to play my best match with what I have and I think I did. Emma played admirably. She’s an amazing tennis player and I respect her a lot.”
“I don’t let negative emotions overwhelm me. I stay positive, I am very energetic and I never give up.
Throughout the match, the 2019 US Open champion produced 32 winners, more than Raducanu who drew 20 winners. He committed 34 unforced errors, less than the 40 unforced errors stemming from the 2021 US Open champion’s racket.
Both players also gave their best when under pressure, as seen when the Canadian saved 11 of 12 break point opportunities, while Raducanu saved 8 of 11 break point opportunities.
22-year-old tennis player Andreescu will now face seventh seed Maria Sakkari in the second round of the Miami Open. This meeting will be their third meeting after the Canadian won their meeting at the Miami Open in the 2021 season and the Greek national returned to the US Open in the same season.
Andreescu’s compatriot Leylah Annie Fernandez also won the first round. The 20-year-old left-handed tennis player managed to find a solution to beat Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko 6-4, 6-3.
Annie Fernandez will now meet ninth seed Belinda Bencic in the second round. In the previous four encounters, each has won two, but Olympic champions Tokyo have won their last two encounters.
