Britain admits to training 17,000 volunteers for Ukrainian soldiers since last year

Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Ministry of Defense English claims to have trained more than 17,000 volunteer soldiers to help Ukraine against the Russian invasion.

The volunteers from various backgrounds all went through a 5-week program which the ministry says transformed them from civilians to soldiers.

The UK and nine partner countries, namely Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania and the Netherlands, have launched an initiative to recruit new volunteers in the Ukrainian Armed Forces last June.

A British-led training program dubbed Operation Interflex teaches recruits, who have little or no prior military experience, a range of skills including weapons handling, battlefield first aid and tactics of patrol.

“The determination and resilience of Ukrainian recruits arriving on British soil, from all walks of life, to train to fight alongside our British and international troops, is something to behold,” said the British Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace. DACsMonday (26/6/2023).

Britain and its international partners, Wallace continued, will continue to provide vital support to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression.

Britain initially offered to train up to 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers in battlefield skills, based on the basic training of British soldiers.

The program has now been extended and is on track to train around 30,000 recruits by 2024, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

Intelligence services said the training had made a significant difference in Ukraine’s combat effectiveness.

“The UK Armed Forces maintain close communication with Ukraine to improve and develop courses based on the skills most needed on the battlefield,” the department added.
