BENGKULU, RAKYATBENGKULU.COM – The British Fort York at Bengkulu has a “younger brother” of the same name in Toronto, Canada. His first construction was Fort York Bengkulu.

Unfortunately, Fort York Bengkulu was completely destroyed, while Fort York Toronto is still well maintained and has become a must-visit tourist spot.

The British party from Madras in India under the command of Ralph Ord and Lieutenant Robert Landey landed at Bengkulu on June 24, 1685.

The rulers of Bengkulu at that time greeted “Orang Kaya Lela” and “Patih Setia Raja Muda” with open arms.

Two weeks later, on July 12, 1685, an agreement was signed between the British represented by Ralph Ord and Prince Raja Muda on behalf of the Kingdom of Selebar (the Kingdom of Bengkulu at that time).

The agreement was dubbed the Treaty of York. One of its contents allowed the British to establish a business partnership office in Bengkulu under the name “York”.

It was only a British strategy because in fact it was not only a trading office but rather a fort because it also served as a place of defense and military barracks.

Fort York Bengkulu was built several years before Fort Marlborough was built.

The distance is about 3 km from Fort Marlborough in the north or currently in the area of Pasar Bengkulu village, Teluk Segara district, Bengkulu town.

Like a fort, Fort York Bengkulu has 4 bastions, parts that protrude at the 4 corners.

Fort York Bengkulu was destroyed and only ruins remain. The damage has occurred since construction began, apparently due to poor site selection and various other impediments.
