Canada expels Chinese diplomat over alleged interference in domestic political affairs

Liputan6.com, Ottawa – Canada decided to expel a Chinese diplomat on Monday (05/08/2023), following accusations of political interference. This was transmitted by the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Mélanie Joly.

“Canada has declared persona non grata against Zhao Wei,” Foreign Minister Joy said in a statement. NC, Tuesday (9/5).

“I have been clear that we will not tolerate any form of foreign interference in our internal affairs. Diplomats in Canada have been warned that if they engage in this type of behavior they will be sent home.”

The decision comes after the Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, revealed that a Canadian Security Intelligence Service report said a Chinese diplomat accredited to the country targeted opposition lawmaker Michael Chong and his relatives in China after Chong criticized Beijing’s treatment of the Uyghur ethnic minority.

The Canadian Intelligence Service also said China tried to influence the results of Canadian federal elections in 2019 and 2021.

Chong himself has repeatedly called for Zhao’s expulsion since reports The Globe and Mail appear.
