After being arrested by the Moral Police, Amini was detained. While in detention, he was allegedly tortured. The UN said it had received reports that Amini had been beaten in the head with a club. Additionally, Amini’s head was also reportedly hit by a vehicle.

After being arrested and detained, Amini was suddenly taken to hospital. According to Tehran police, while in detention, Amini suddenly developed heart problems. According to statements from his family, Amini was in good health before his arrest and never complained of heart disease. Amini was treated in a coma and finally breathed his last on September 16.

Amini’s death and the torture she allegedly endured immediately sparked public outrage. Iranians took to the streets and staged demonstrations to protest the authorities’ actions against Amini. Iranian women took part in the action. They even committed the act of burning the hijab as a form of protest.

As of this writing, Iranian security forces have arrested more than 1,200 protesters. Rioting during the protests also left at least 41 people dead.
