Government Canada decided to stop selling weapons to Israel. This decision was taken following a vote in the House of Commons on Monday (18/3).

To the Toronto Star, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed the news. He said the move was “the right thing to do.”

Report of The GuardianCanada's decision to stop arms sales to Israel came after the New Democratic Party (NDP) called on the government to stop future arms exports to Israel.

The NDP asked this question out of frustration with the government's failure to protect civilians in Gaza.

Alongside this request, a parliamentary motion was adopted, which obtained 204 votes in favor and 117 votes against. Alongside the NDP, several parties, including the Liberals, the Bloc Québécois and the Green Party, have also urged the government to seek “the creation of a Palestinian state.”

In response to the decision, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East called the motion “a small step toward ending Canada's involvement in Israel's genocidal war in Gaza.”

Meanwhile, the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs said the motion was “misguided and dishonest.”

Canada helps Israel “defend itself” by launching attacks on the Gaza Strip. However, Canada has recently begun to criticize Israel's attitude, considered too excessive, particularly with regard to the security of civilians.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized the Zionists in November 2023, saying that “the killing of women, children (and) babies” in the Gaza Strip must stop immediately.
