Ottawa –
Prime Minister (PM) Canada Justin Trudeau anger China with his comments linking the country’s lithium production with forced labor. Beijing has harshly criticized Trudeau and warned that Ottawa will face consequences if he continues to “downgrade” China’s human rights record.
As reported ReutersOn Friday (5/5/2023), Trudeau during his visit to the United States last week, linked lithium production in China to “forced labor” without giving further details, as he discussed Canadian efforts to increase production of the metal used in electric vehicles and other batteries.
“His words ignore facts and mix black and white. The Chinese side expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolutely opposes it,” the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa said in response to Trudeau’s comments.
The Chinese embassy accused Trudeau of “political manipulation under the guise of human rights” and of seeking to undermine Beijing.
“We call on Canada to reflect, deeply regret its mistakes and take concrete steps to address its own serious human rights issues,” the Chinese Embassy said in a statement.
“The Canadian side must respect the facts, set aside prejudices and stop denigrating the human rights situation in China, otherwise Canada will certainly suffer the consequences,” the statement said.
The Canadian prime minister’s office said there was nothing to add to Trudeau’s comments last week.
