Although China and the United States regularly spy on each other, analysts say it is one of China’s biggest known cyber espionage campaigns against critical US infrastructure.

Microsoft analysts dubbed the Chinese spy group the “Volt Typhoon”. The group is suspected of developing capabilities that could disrupt critical communications infrastructure between the United States and the Asian region.

SecureWorks researcher Marc Burnard, who worked on some of the Typhoon Volt disruptions, said Chinese spies appear to primarily target US organizations vertically in defense and government, particularly for espionage purposes. .

Microsoft also said the group targeted critical infrastructure organizations in the US Pacific region.

“There is greater interest in this actor due to the geopolitical situation,” he explained.
