China speaks out for diplomats expelled by Canada

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – China speaks openly about the expulsion of its diplomats by Canada. President Xi Jinping’s government has expressed its strong rejection of Ottawa’s decision to expel one of its diplomats.

In a statement, China’s representative to the maple country said Canada had “sabotaged” relations between the two countries. China also warned Canada not to take a path that could damage relations between the two countries.

“The Chinese side will take firm countermeasures and all consequences that arise will be borne by the Canadian side,” indicates the official statement quoted on the official website of the embassy, cited by AFP, Tuesday (9/5 /2023).

Previously, Canada announced on Monday the expulsion of a Chinese diplomat named Zhao Wei, who worked at the Chinese Consulate General in Toronto. Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said Ottawa had granted the diplomat persona non grata status.

Zhao is accused of trying to intimidate Canadian lawmaker Michael Chong and his family in Hong Kong. This is due to his criticism of the Chinese government regarding the Xinjiang issue.

“Relations between Canada and China are known to be tense. Relations have warmed since Canada arrested one of the senior officials of the Chinese technology company Huawei in late 2018.

At the highest level, Chinese President Xi Jinping also clashed with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G20 summit in Bali last November. At that time, Xi confronted Trudeau for allegedly leaking their conversation to the media.
