Controversial penalty denies Vettel victory in Canada

Jakarta (ANTARA) – A penalty deprived Sebastian Vettel of his victory for Ferrari at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday local time, with the result that the champion title of the seventh racing series fell to Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel, who started from pole position, crossed the finish line first ahead of Hamilton, but Ferrari did not celebrate the victory that day as the German driver had to drop back to second place after receiving a penalty for a dangerous re-entry onto the track. according to Reuters.

Under pressure from Hamilton, Vettel made a mistake on lap 48 by going too hard through the chicane and going wide onto the trackside grass. He managed to control his car to return to the track in front of the British driver who was forced to brake suddenly to avoid being stuck in the guardrail.

Racing continued while stewards investigated the incident. A few laps later, when Vettel was informed of the penalty decision, the four-time world champion's anger exploded when it was heard over the driver's radio communication.

“I have no other way. Seriously, I can't go anywhere,” Vettel said. “They took this race away from us.”

Elsewhere, Mercedes told Hamilton to stay “behind Vettel's gearbox” and hail victory.

“It's not the win I wanted,” said Hamilton, who has five wins this season and tied Michael Schumacher's Canadian record of seven wins.

The decision to impose sanctions on Vettel allowed Mercedes to extend its dominance by winning seven Grand Prix titles this season.

A disgruntled Ferrari had to settle for the trophy of second place on the podium by Vettel and third place by his teammate, Charles Leclerc.

After the race, Vettel jumped out of his car and headed straight to the stewards' office.

When he got out of there, he walked through the parked race cars and took the number one marker in front of Hamilton's car, then replaced it with the number two marker.
