Tennis News: Sixth-seeded Cori Gauff started the 2023 Miami Open season with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rebecca Marino in the second round.
The home tennis player took 1 hour and 12 minutes to claim victory over Canadian Marino and reach the third round of the Miami Open for the second time in a row. Last season, he advanced to the fourth round before losing to champion Iga Swiatek. This achievement is his best achievement to date in Miami.
“To be honest, the game this time around was ups and downs,” admits Gauff. “I did a good job returning the ball, considering Rebecca is a big serve. I’m really happy with the way I played.
“He’s not an easy opponent. He fires a lot of hard shots, doesn’t really give you any rhythm. You just have to endure.
The tennis player, who turned 19 last week, now holds the record for the most wins in a WTA 1000-level tournament before turning 20 thanks to his 34th victory in a tournament at this level. She broke the record previously held by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who won 33 tournaments at this level before she turned 20.
The home side picked up a second return leg win over Marino, including converting five of the nine break point chances he created and recovering twice after trailing to a break in the second set. She also beat the Canadian national en route to the first Grand Slam final of her Roland Garros career.
Marino was once again prevented from earning his first win over a top 10 player on 10th down.
For a spot in the fourth round of the Miami Open, Gauff will next face 27th seed Anastasia Potapova. The sixth seed defeated Potapova in straight sets at the 2019 US Open. At Montreal 2021, she was leading 5-0 when the 27th seed was forced to retire.
In the second round, Potapova looked dominant as she beat Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3.
Meanwhile, another tennis player, Claire Liu, advanced to the third round of the Miami Open with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Austrian tennis player, Julia Grabher with 6- 4, 6-3 and will then face the 25th seed, Martina Trevisan who eliminated Japanese tennis player Nao Hibino with 6-4, 6-3.
