Death of Kiska, the last orca in captivity in Canada

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – The Ontario provincial government said Friday (3/11) that Kiska, the last Canadian killer whale living in captivity, has died. This information was obtained from the amusement park where Kiska lived.

“The Department has informed MarineLand that the whale named Kiska died at MarineLand on March 9, 2023. The autopsy was performed by professionals still working for MarineLand,” said Brent Ross, spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office. province of Canada, in a press release.

MarineLand is an amusement park located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Kiska, who was captured in Icelandic waters in 1979, is around 47 years old.

MarineLand said Kiska’s health has declined in recent weeks.

“The marine mammal care team and experts are doing everything possible to support Kiska’s comfort and will mourn her loss,” local media quoted the park as saying.

Canadian non-profit animal rights group Animal Justice has called for an investigation into MarineLand’s treatment of killer whales.

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) described Kiska as “the loneliest orca in the world”. Her life was marked by “tragedy after tragedy” after her five children died before the age of seven.

“Animal welfare services are in place to determine compliance with standards of care,” says Ross. MarineLand has been inspected 160 times since January 2020 as part of the Animal Welfare Service’s work to ensure standards of care are met by law, Ross added.
