FIBA World Cup 2023: Defending champions Spain and Canada advance to quarterfinals in a big way

Liputan6.com, Jakarta- Canada advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIBA World Cup in spectacular fashion. Canada won 88-85 by eliminating defending champion Spain at the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta on Sunday (03/09/2023) evening WIB.

The match between Canada and Spain was very fierce from the first minute. The two teams took turns chasing each other and the score was often drawn. Spain had a six-point lead midway through the first quarter thanks to Willy Hernangomez’s jump shot.

However, Canada immediately recovered and even managed to take a half-ball lead after RJ Barrett scored five points in a row. Barrett then brought Canada within three points with two free throws. The first quarter ended 21-21 after Alberto Diaz scored a three-pointer.

In the second quarter, Spain dominated. The duo of brothers Juancho and Willy Hernangomez led Spain to leave Canada. Willy’s pass, which Juancho completed with a dunk, gave Spain a 44-37 lead with 135 minutes left in the second quarter.

Willy’s pass completed by Dario Brizuela made Spain even faster and took a 10-point lead. Canada failed to reach single digits because Nickeil Alexander Walker’s three-pointer on the buzzer beater missed the target.

At the start of the third quarter, Canada slowly managed to catch up thanks to RJ Barrett, Shai Gilgeous Alexander and Dillon Brooks. Even Canada managed to take the lead after a technical foul. Canada took a half-lead with five minutes and 21 seconds left.
