Jakarta: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. Trudaeu will attend a series of ASEAN summits, including the East Asia Summit.

Landing in Soekarno-Hatta on an official Canadian government plane, Trudeau was greeted by the acting governor of Banten Al-Muktabar. Trudeau was seen accompanied by his son.

In Jakarta, several meetings will be held by the Canadian Prime Minister. This includes issues related to the Indo-Pacific and relations with ASEAN.

Canada’s Ambassador to ASEAN, Vicky Singmin, previously said that the Government of Canada will start launching the Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS) in November 2022 in Cambodia. This new step is considered to be in line with the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Outlook (AOIP).

He added that essentially, through this strategy, Canada wishes to expand and deepen its presence and partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region. “For an open, free, sustainable and inclusive partnership in the region”, he continued.

Five strategies constitute the main objective of the Canadian SPI. The first is to promote peace, resilience and security.

According to Ambassador Singmin, regional stability Indo-Pacific is essential to the broader global regulatory order. Through this orientation, Canada wishes to strengthen its capabilities in military cooperation, cybersecurity and security.

“This is in line with the regional approach which is the key to Indo-Pacific partnership in all these areas,” he said.

The second strategy is to increase trade, investment and supply chain resilience. Third, said Ambassador Singmin, namely investment and public relations.

The fourth goal is to build a green and sustainable future. “And fifth, Canada will become an active, engaged, contributing and reliable partner in the Indo-Pacific region,” said Ambassador Singmin.

“We will increase our diplomatic capacity in the region and appoint a special envoy to more effectively advance Canadian thinking and strengthen dialogue in the region,” he continued.

According to Singmin, this step is in line with ASEAN’s AOIP which is effectively in the middle of the Indo-Pacific region. The partnership with ASEAN is therefore very important for the country.

“Canada looks forward to continuing to work closely with our ASEAN partners and discuss mutually beneficial, stable, sustainable and prosperous cooperation in the region,” he concluded.
