KBA.ONE, Jakarta – Four tourists died and 16 others were injured when the minibus they were traveling in fell into a ravine after visiting Machu Picchu, Peru.
“Two of the tourists who died were Colombian, while the other two have not been identified,” said the local government of Cusco, where the ancient Inca fort is located.
Among the injured are four Frenchmen, two Greeks, two Israelis, two Canadians, two Argentinians, two Peruvians, a Dutchman and an unknown person.
“The minibus fell into a ravine about 100 meters deep,” said Roberto Sanchez, Minister of Tourism and Foreign Affairs.
The accident happened on Sunday August 21, 2022, about 100 kilometers from the city of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire which is the main point of departure for tourists visiting the Machu Picchu World Heritage Site.
“There was fog where the accident happened,” added Sanchez, who said the tourists were returning from Machu Picchu, located in the Andes.
Road accidents are frequent in Peru where speed, poor road surfaces, the absence of road signs and the lack of control by the authorities aggravate the problem.
