Hoax: Elderberry fruit can replace aluminum-containing flu vaccine

Yogyakarta

Reports are circulating that elderberries can replace flu vaccines that contain aluminum, mercury, and formaldehyde. The DIY Communication and Information Service declared the news a hoax.

[HOAKS] Elderberries can replace flu vaccines that contain aluminum, mercury and formaldehyde,” wrote Diskominfo DIY’s official X account, @kominfodiy, as seen detikJogjaMonday (11/13/2023).

It has been reported that an image is circulating containing comparative information between flu vaccine injections and the benefits of elderberries. In the picture it is stated that the flu vaccine injection contains aluminum, is not very effective and does not relieve flu symptoms, while elderberry fruit can reduce flu in 4 days.

“In fact, using elderberry as a substitute for flu vaccines that contain aluminum is wrong,” Diskominfo DIY said.

Still in the DIY Diskominfo post, reported by turnbackhoax.id citing Agence France-Presse, of the 10 approved flu vaccines, none contain aluminum. Ian Gemmill, a member of Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization, said some types of flu vaccines contain thimerosal, a mercury derivative used in multidose vials to preserve the vaccine.

“The dose of thimerosal contained is very low and has not been proven to be dangerous. Meanwhile, regarding the formaldehyde content, Natasha Crowcroft, professor at the Dalla Lana Faculty of Public Health, University of Toronto, stated that the content is very low, even “Less than pears which contain 50% formaldehyde. times more, so the formaldehyde content of the flu vaccine is not dangerous,” the Diskominfo DIY message continues.
